As Japanese planes bomb Shanghai, Yaya and Tuduo flee the city by jumping into the truck of a small traveling circus. Tuduo tries to persuade Yaya to stay with the benevolent circusfolk, but Yaya insists on finding her family and sets off on her own, despite the dangers in the cold wilderness...
